Book Review: The Hunger Games Trilogy

I finished reading the Hunger Games a few months ago and have been meaning to write a review ever since. These books instantly stole my love and for quite some time I couldn’t stop talking about them. (You can ask any member of my family.) Although they are a bit gory and violent, and had me cringing from time to time, they were totally worth the read. I should add that they are also the only books that can make me cry. (And I mean really cry.) I won’t say any more to avoid spoilers. I have to say that the first one was my favorite. I’ve heard lots of people say that catching fire was better, but the first one just kept my attention better. Mockingjay was definitely my least favorite. It was more of a “war story” than the others, and I’m not a big fan of that. Don’t get me wrong, it was still good. I’d say I’d give the first two five stars and Mockingjay 4. Do I recommend these books? Absolutely.

If you’ve already read the books you should go check out Studio C’s Mockingjay parody. Warning: this will be stuck in your head for eternity! 😉

My Favorite Apps

I recently bought an iPod touch and since I got it I haven’t been able to put it down. I thought it’d be fun to share some of my favorite apps with you all!

First and foremost, Pinterest.

IMG_0066.PNG

I spend so much time on this app, it’s not even funny. Since most of you probably know about Pinterest, that’s all I have to say.

Next of course, is the wonderful Netflix. I don’t use this quite as much, but it’s still useful.

My favorite show to watch is “Psych”. You should totally go check it out. Here’s just a little bit of awesomeness from this awesome show.

Sorry if the Gifs won’t play, I’ve been having trouble with that.
Yup.

Next up, CocoPPa! This app is great for making your other apps look terrifical. And yes, I know that’s not a word.

There’s also CocoPPa Keyboard. So you can make your keyboard look pretty.

Spotify. Because who wouldn’t want free music?

Now onto games! 😄

Whale Trails. My friend Piper got me hooked on this game. I really can’t explain it so you’ll just have to go play!

IMG_0064.PNG

Piano Tiles! I’m pretty sure I’ve posted about this before.

IMG_0065.PNG

Ketchapp games. My current favorite is this one:

My favorite photo editing app is Retrica. It has so many effects to choose from!

There’s me looking crazy! #Typicalme

Then there’s PicCollage! It basically just does what you would guess; it helps you make collages.

IMG_0069.PNG

RetailMeNot. You just type in the store you’re looking for and will give you deals and coupons! I know, pretty cool, right?!

That’s that! Hope you found some new apps to check out!

Christmas Tag

Recently, Chloe from Curious Ramblings did a “Christmas Tag”. The rules are that anyone can do it (yay!) and you have to mention the person you got the tag from. That’s it! Easy, right? I thought it looked like fun, so here goes!

1. Over the years, what has been one tradition that has stayed with your family since you can remember?
Probably sitting by the tree with hot chocolate the first night after we set it up. (And sometimes watching “Elf”)
2. The first thing you think of when you hear the word ‘Christmas’? Happiness! 😊
3. Number one favorite Christmas movie, GO:
Elf, of course!
4. When do you start playing Christmas music in your house?
Honestly, I listen to my Christmas music all year round! I know what your thinking, I must be crazy. And yes, I guess I am! But Pentatonix Christmas music is to good to wait all year for!
5. What are you doing to celebrate Christmas this year? Like I mentioned in my last post, we are driving to North Dakota to visit my mom’s side of the family.
6. Christmas song you put on repeat every day of the month:
All the Pentatonix songs!
7. Hot cocoa or apple cider?
Hot chocolate all the way!
8. Favorite part about Christmas?
Just the Christmas spirit in the air! Everyone is always so joyful around Christmas (at least I am) and I just love it!

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas….

Christmas season is finally coming around. For obvious reasons, this is my very favorite time of year. Yesterday we got to set up the Christmas tree, and if I could, I would post some pictures, but my camera charger has vanished into thin air.

Today we are making paper snow flakes, which by the way, I had forgotten how much fun they are to make! (Besides the fact that my hands now ache from cutting through so many layers of paper) Click HERE for patterns.

And of course, there’s the excitement of going to visit family over Christmas vacation. This year we are driving to North Dakota to visit my mom’s side of the family.

All in all, this is basically me when it finally gets to be Christmas time:

Yup, that pretty much sums it up.

Yes, I am posting twice in one day. And yes, I’m pretty sure this is a first. Yay for me!

For those of you who are already obsessed with Studio C, good for you! And for those of you who aren’t, I feel for you. Basically Studio C is a sketch comedy TV show. And it’s AMAZING. I have spent hours upon hours of my life watching this. (Notice I did not say wasted.)  Here are some of what I thinks are there best sketches.

Most Awkward Death Scene Ever

Poker Face

Grocery Bag

State of Mind

Trip to the ER

Dead Wedding

Shoulder Angel and Shawn Bradley

P90X

Flirting Academy

The Hunger Games Musical: Mockingjay Parody – Katniss’s Song

I hope you enjoyed this post! (And possibly got hooked on Studio C!)

Guest Post From The Amazing Chloe Salts!

Hey everyone!  I’m Chloe from your favorite blog (you know it is!) Curious Ramblings.  Actually if you’re over here reading my post, that means that Hannah’s blog is your favorite and that’s totally totally great too because her blog is obviously just as fabulous if not more.

When she asked me to do a guest post I was first flattered:

And then a little unsure:

And then flat-out clueless and scrambling for a clue.

What does one write about in a guest post?

I threw around many ideas, took way too long to get back to her, and I’ve finally decided I’m going to give you all the run-down of one of my new favorite books that I think every young woman should read: “Grace, Gold & Glory: Gabby Douglas’ Autobiography”.

Story synopsis: In the 2012 London Olympics, US gymnast Gabby Douglas stole hearts and flew high as the All-Around Gold Medal winner, as well as acting as a critical member of the US gold-medal-winning women gymnastics team. In this personal autobiography, Gabby tells her story of faith, perseverance, and determination, demonstrating you can reach your dreams if you let yourself soar.

Gabby’s writing is honest, innocent, sweet, and inspiring.  In her autobiography she is honest about the financial situation that she and her family were in for much of her life, as well as all her gymnastic struggles.  It’s harder to relate to her because she is so naturally talented and athletic and doesn’t fail as much as I’d like ( :0 ), but the autobiography gives you a glimpse into her world and makes her so much more personal and human  then the TV screen ever makes her out to be! (shocker!)

What made you want to read it? There were a number of reasons.  One, I’d heard it recommended over and over.  Two, I got to watch her in the last Olympics so I knew of her and wanted to know more about her! And three, I was getting a little tired of sci-fi fantasy books and I always enjoy a good autobiography.

Did it live up to your expectations?  Yes and no.  Yes in that I knew it would inspire me, challenge me, and make me smile.  No in that I expected the writing style to be a little more professional, with not so many slang terms such as “lol”, etc.

What is the subject’s most admirable quality? This girl puts the P in perseverance.  Like, wow.  Her early teen years she was away from her family for years at a time just so she can continue her gymnastics training, which is crazy to me.  It’s amazing how close she was to completely quitting gymnastics.

What, if anything, surprised you?  I was surprised to learn that her family held to many Jewish beliefs.  That came out a lot in the verses she shared, the meals she talked about having with her family, and her conversations with her mom.

What did you like or dislike about the book that hasn’t been discussed already? At the end of each chapter she has a few paragraphs on her dad.  He has been in and out of her life for years, and she has very mixed emotions of confusion, sadness, happiness, and feeling like she wasn’t good enough for him to stay.  As hard as these sections were to hear, it totally put my perspective where it should be and made me so immensely grateful for a dad who loves me and my family and would never leave us, and even more my daddy in heaven:)

All of the gymnastic terminology was a little foreign to me, so it was hard for me to appreciate her triumphs or emphasize with the scale of her failures.  I wish it had been explained a little better overall.

Were you glad you read this book? Would you recommend it to a friend?  Worth the read, and the fact that I’m doing a book review on it should probably tell you that I’d recommend it to a friend!

I rate this book 4.5 stars out of 5 simply because her writing style felt like it was trying a little too hard to be natural.  But that’s very nit-picky of me and I really did like it. ^_^

Thanks again Hannah for letting me guest post!!!  I had a blast:)

Thanks so much Chloe! You all should make sure and check out her blog. (If you haven’t already!)
I will (hopefully) try to post more often! I know I say that all the time, but if I can think of anything to post, I really will this time! 😉 Thanks for reading!

Books I’ve Been Reading Lately

5

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. I’m a big fan of the Harry Potter books. I just started this recently, but so far it’s been really good!

162719

Just Ella. Margaret Peterson Haddix is such a good author, and I’ve been really enjoying this book.

16248113

The School for Good and Evil. For some reason this book failed to keep me entertained. I was surprised by that though; I’ve heard nothing but good reviews on it! Over all though, the plot is great.

11281852

Kisses from Katie. This book is amazing. Katie Davis is amazing, her story is amazing; the book itself is just amazing.

7054178

Witch and Wizard. This book was really good. There wasn’t any part of it that was boring, and it always made me want to read just one more chapter! But, it ended with a terrible cliffhanger! I’m excited to read the next book!

Thanks for reading!
